Frustrated Refrigeration Repair CustomerWell I have another story where the customer was told they needed a new unit when what they really needed was a new refrigeration repair technician.  Actually this establishment was told to get two new units.

The story begins where the bar had two beer coolers.  The first cooler stopped working so they called in a big name refrigeration service company to fix it.

First Refrigeration Repair Tech Expensive Advice: Buy New Beer Cooler

The refrigeration repair technician diagnosed the problem correctly, which was the unit was out of refrigerant.  Afterwards, he added a valve to the unit and charged it up.  The valve he installed was a temporary type that should not have been left on because they eventually leak.  He could not pull the condenser out from the unit to work on it because he did not know that a hidden screw held the condenser in the cooler.  He used a leak detector to find the leak but could not locate the leak.  His final analysis was unit is bad due to undetectable leak, so he told the customer that the unit needed to be replaced.

After the technician left, the cooler worked for one day and then stopped cooling.  In addition, a second beer cooler stopped working.  The customer was going into the weekend with both coolers out.  Somehow they got Marathon Air’s phone number and I stopped in to take a look.  What I found was the second cooler had a bad compressor and needed a new compressor.  They agreed to repair it but this was Friday afternoon and I could not fix it until Monday morning, so I focused my attention on the unit the previous technician said was garbage.

Reality: Leak Repairable

This was the beer cooler with a refrigerant leak.  I went about pressure testing unit with high pressure nitrogen. After thirty minutes of searching, I found the leak in a capillary tube.  The leak was in a hard to reach location, but after much work I was able to repair the leak.  Unit was leak tested and leak free.  I charged the unit with refrigerant and the unit began working  like new.

It was now after six p.m. on a Friday and I at least got one of the two beer units running for their weekend.  As I was leaving, the customer showed me a two door freezer in the kitchen that was at 50 degrees.  They said another refrigeration repair guy told them this needed to be replaced too.  I told them I would be back Monday to fix the other beer cooler and at that time would look at the freezer. On Monday I replaced the compressor on the second beer cooler.  Now both beer coolers were running like new.

The two door True reach-in freezer was next up.  I found its  evaporator coil iced up.  I defrosted the evaporator coil.  Then I checked the thermostat which was good.  Next I checked the compressor, condenser fans, evaporator fans, defrost heaters, refrigerant levels, door gaskets, door heaters,  and drain line heater.  All these systems were operating perfectly.  So the only thing left, which I suspected all along, was the defrost timer.  I tested the timer and it was bad.  Without a  defrost cycle, the freezer evaporator coil will ice up and the  freezer will not get cold.

The director of operations was with one of the owners and happened to walk by just as I was finishing up my diagnosis of the freezer.  He was telling the owner that business was good and they were making money except for the fact that they were facing the purchase of a three thousand dollar freezer and about thousand five hundred  dollars for each beer cooler. The director of operations was ecstatic that I fixed the two beer coolers and could not believe it when I told him he needed a defrost timer that would cost 275.00 dollars.

Save Real Money

Save Money On Refrigeration RepairsAll told the repairs came to one thousand dollars.  They saved five  thousand dollars.  In addition, one of the beer coolers is like new, since a compressor is the most expensive part of the cooler.

I cannot believe how inept some repair service people are.  In this case the service person that told them to get a new beer cooler charged them 375.00.  For what?  He charged up the cooler with a refrigerant that leaked out in one day and left the customer with the prospect of buying a new cooler for fifteen-hundred dollars.  A different repair guy told them to get a new freezer. Lucky for the owner when after the third unit failed they called Marathon Air.
